How Our Early Careers Work is Making an Impact.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of reflecting on the journey we’ve taken with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Europe Ltd. to co-create a truly standout intern programme.
As the 2025 British Training Awards approach, we’re proud to see this work recognised as a finalist in the Early Careers Initiative of the Year category. But beyond the recognition, what really matters is the impact this programme has had on the interns, their managers, and the wider organisation.
So what made this programme special? From the outset, our goal was to design a development experience that felt fresh, human, and genuinely useful. We blended creativity with emotional intelligence, and layered in real-world skills that would help interns thrive not just during their placement, but well into their careers. Whether it was exploring purpose through the Japanese concept of IKIGAI, pitching their projects in a Dragons’ Den-style challenge, or reflecting on growth through Pokémon-style profile cards – every element was designed to build confidence, capability, and connection.
The power of reflection and connection — one of the most powerful aspects of the programme was the emphasis on reflection. Interns were encouraged to think deeply about their values, strengths, and goals. They built strong bonds as a cohort, supported each other through peer learning, and developed a sense of personal brand that will serve them well in the future. Managers also reported learning from their interns – a reminder of the value of reverse mentoring and the importance of intergenerational dialogue in the workplace.
Being named a finalist in the British Training Awards is a proud moment for Interaction and for Otsuka. It validates the thought, care, and creativity that went into this programme. But more importantly, it shines a light on what’s possible when organisations invest in early careers development with intention. It’s not just about onboarding – it’s about building future leaders.
