A flying start for teams

The position

Our client is a Civil Service agency. They had restructured the organisation to introduce team-based working and needed to make sure that this new way of working got off to a flying start and delivered the results they were looking for.

How did we tackle it?

Initially we worked with managers and team leaders to establish a leadership style that was consistent with the new organisation. We then designed a model two-day team building event that had the flexibility to be tweaked for large and small teams from different functions in the agency. Before each event, the team leader and lead consultant spoke to clarify the specific objectives and we used a range of exercises to bring out the challenges of the new way of working. This allowed each team to work on its own issues in the context of the changes and to develop a highly practical and relevant action plan. The programme covered:

  • team working skills and behaviours
  • team roles and how to make the best use of them
  • agreeing team behaviours
  • building relationships
  • preparing a team vision

The programme was extremely ambitious; following seven leadership programmes, we ran 25 team building events within seven months.

What did it achieve?

The client, the participants, and we were delighted with the results. It really did help the teams get off to a flying start – they were clear about the goals and about how they were going to achieve them. The reported benefits include:

  • a huge improvement in morale and commitment
  • a high level of acceptance of the new team work approach
  • a 15% reduction in backlog processing time
