Coaching skills for managers

The position

This was an existing client who wanted to develop coaching skills in the senior management team. The brief was to develop a highly practical workshop that would take the managers from a directive coaching style to a non-directive one.

How did we tackle it?

We designed a programme, which first introduced delegates to coaching styles and approaches and then gave them lots of opportunity to practise coaching.

Day 1 looked at different coaching styles, what works when, the different tools and techniques they could use and gave them the opportunity to try them out.

Day 2 gave them the chance to try out their new skills. We designed some case studies, typical of the situations in which they find themselves, and used two actors to act out the scenarios. Each actor then joined one of two groups to be coached – in a non-directive way – in how to proceed with the scenario. It was highly interactive and the participants could join in the scenario to model behaviour if they wanted. It was a very immediate way for the participants to see the effect of their actions – and it was a great success.

What did it achieve

We fulfilled our brief to everyone’s satisfaction. The participants gained an understanding of different coaching styles and the benefits of the non-directive approach. The programme increased their confidence in, and willingness to, coach their staff. The organisation saw a long term benefit in the area. Problem solved.
