Tools and methods

We're not interested in fads and phases - we are only interested in doing things well.

We'll start by understanding what the job is, then we'll select the tools and approaches to get it done.

Building the right foundations

The brief

Working with one of the largest construction companies in the UK, our brief was to design an induction week that enabled graduates to integrate quickly into the business, begin to develop key skills in line with a competency framework, and to network with each other at an early stage in their career.  Our client is a very active community partner and was keen for the graduates to become involved with the CSR strategy as soon as possible so we were asked to make sure this was incorporated into the week along with a number of key business inputs.

How did we tackle it?

We knew the induction programme needed to have a lasting impact and act as a springboard for development for the rest of the programme so we designed an intense and exciting four day induction programme where groups worked on delivering a business sponsored CR project that delivered real business outcomes.

Just like in real life the groups had a number of competing priorities that they had to manage.  These included:

  • completing a number of experiential activities selected to focus on particular behavioural competencies that linked to the competency framework
  • meeting key guests from the business
  • attending a number of learning inputs that would help both their project but also their development beyond the programme
  • reviewing and reflecting on their learning
  • meeting external partners

Outcomes

  • One immediate outcome of the programme is each graduate became a Construction Ambassador.  This means on behalf of the company and the construction industry each graduate can get involved in engagement and education activities that encourage young people into the industry.
  • Each graduate left with a clearer sense of how they performed against each of the behavioural competencies and a plan of how they would further develop themselves during the first twelve months of the programme.
  • Because the business was engaged during the week and the projects were real the business directly benefited from the project outcomes.  One group went on to re-design the new graduate recruitment brochure.

Because of the success of induction we are proud to announce we will be delivering the rest of the Graduate Development Programme for this client.
